Coined by Jill Soloway in response to Laura Mulvey’s theorization of the Male Gaze, this theory depicts woman as the objects of desire while the female gaze is a way of looking that allows everyone subjectivity. It is meant to evoke a feeling, rather than just seeing the characters”, simply put- the female gaze is a way of looking that gives everyone agency. My goal for this series was to cite earlier imagery of women without agency and transform them from objects of desire into fully formed subjects. Essentially this body of work is meant to decenter the divide between self and other.
